Winterize your Gutters

Winter is here and it’s not leaving anytime soon – this means cold weather and snow, but have you thought about your gutters? Properly installed gutters should last you a while, but if you don’t have gutter guards, like the ProLoc Elite™ gutter protection systems, or if you have sectional gutters, then you will need to know some tips on how to prepare your gutters for the upcoming winter.

The first thing to do is clean out your gutters. If you want to do this step yourself, you will need the proper attire to get into the crevices and dig out the leftover leaves and debris from the fall months and throw it away. If this doesn’t sound like a step you want to do yourself, there are many companies that offer cleaning services for your gutters.

The next step is to check to make sure there aren’t any leaks or blockages. This can be done by running water through the gutter. If water is flowing where it shouldn’t or downspouts are blocked by debris, then this can cause some deadly icicles or ice dams when the winter weather hits. When looking for leakage, be sure to note the spots where water is coming from to know if it can be fixed with a sealant or if it will need extensive repairs which could be costly.

If you find standing water in your gutters after testing for leaks and blocks, then that could indicate that your gutters aren’t hung properly or are no longer in the right spot. Water should be traveling down the gutters and out the downspouts away from your home’s foundation.
